Berlin to Athens continued...

After having a great time at terminal 5...off to Athens...

This was the worst flight we had in the entire journey. The seats were uncomfortable and the headrests were awful. We all were so pleased to arrive in Athens. The pickup van was there and about 35 minutes drive and we were at our hotel. At this stage it was around 4am local time. We were so tired but the hotel staff were wonderful, took our bags up for us and couldn't have been more helpful. Aahhh...bed at last.

Up in the morning (not too early) for breakfast which fortunately didn't finish until 10 am...
Yet another lovely breakfast. Dougie went to reception as he had hurt his back and they organised a masseur to come to the hotel to treat him. He rold us not to wait around, so Dan, Nick and I took off to explore!!

Danielle is so good with getting us on and off trains in new places, and getting us back without any dramas. Great little tour guide!!

We caught the train at an underground a short walk from the hotel. Two stops later and we were at the square and the flea markets. What a site. So much activity! Where to start. I wanted a gold Byzantine cross, so we started to have a browse in a jewellers window...not that easy..out came the man and we started looking. What a business...I found a nice one which eventually came to 650€...but the one I really liked was over 2000€ without the chain...but the bottom price hadn't been discussed at this point!! We finally got out of there with a promose to phone him if we wanted the first one. Of course before thils I had put the pin number into an ATM 3 times...wrong pin...so it was blocked. This was my excuse that I had to get Dougie's card to get money...answer...he could try and unblock my pin for me...no, I would talk to my husband firsr...Phew....that was the only jeweller that day.

Then we found a shop...another thing on my list was an icon...went into a shop...what a character the young guy was...ended up buying an incense burner and charcoal...found an icon which I quite liked but it wasn't really the one I wanted but said I would take it....200€...I broke into a sweat...he dropped it to 150€ but I decided to decline.

We also went to the Poet Sandalmaker....and I purchased 2 pairs...30€ each....I thought they would be much more expensive...and I had my photo taken with his son...very happy! This place I had seen on a TV show at home and was determined to go there...he had made Sandals for Jackie Onassis, Audrey Hepburn and more...

After looking around...Dan and Nick did some too...we came back to the hotel.

Dougie had some success with the massage but was told to rest...Nick was also having a quiet time...so Dan and I went down to the restaurant/bar and had a couple if drinks and shared a Crrtian bread, tomato and fetta cheese...so good. The note on my phone was...best day ever (that is probably an a bit over the top) and that I love Athens, the shopkeepers and the atmosphere.

Down to dinner and we all had a drink and a great meal. We started talking to a man whose name was Dean. He was in his eighties and we had a nice time together. Another great meal...all we seem to do is eat and drink! LOL
